G2 Esports and Fnatic out of LoL Worlds 2023

Europe will not be represented in the finals of this year's LoL World Championship, after Fnatic G2 lost the decisive matches to advance to the next stage against the Chinese representatives.

LEC fans may rightfully be unhappy after yet another World Cup fiasco for their favourites. As every year before the start of the tournament, there was a big hype for the European teams, especially G2, which, despite the extremely favorable draw, did not manage to make it to the top 8.

Let's remind, G2 started with two wins after the initial Bo1 matches, and after losing against one of the two main favorites, the Gen.G team, they had an ideal opportunity to move on with a victory against the LCS champion NRG, who completely outclassed them and with a convincing triumph brought a huge joy to American fans.

G2 could redeem themselves in the fifth round, but their rivals were Bilibili Gaming, one of the LPL titans. The match ended with an enormous difference in the top lane from which even a much better team could not recover. Bean completely outplayed BrokenBlade who, even with all the help in the form of favorable picks, could not match his rival, and already in the first game he achieved a 7-0-2 score on Jax, with an overall 16-3 victory for BLG by 34 minutes of play.

G2 manages to open the second game with early kills and make the difference in their favor on the mid thanks to some good Nocturne ults from Yike, who worked well with Caps in those moments. However, as the game went on Bilibili managed to stabilize, Bean was great on Renekton and Elk got stronger and stronger on Zera, which is why Bilibili was able to take the lead even though G2 had the Mountain Soul buff.

At a crucial moment, Mikyx manages to find a pick with Lissandra on Elk, which brings G2 back to life, and after Elder and Baron manage to even the score.

Unfortunately, that was also all we saw from G2 until the end of the match. In the third game, Bean dominated again. He creates an early cannon advantage and then helps the rest of the team all over the map, while managing to maintain a farm advantage over BB along the way. BLG slowly but surely increases the lead and a little before the end of half an hour of the game they achieve a 16-5 victory and tickets to the quarterfinals.

In the previous matches of the fifth round, Weibo Gaming defeated Fnatic 2-1, while in the Korean derby KT Rolster was better than Dplus KIA with 2-0.

Shortly after the end of the fifth round, we got the quarterfinal pairs. Gen.G fared best as their remaining top contenders for the title are on the other side of the draw giving them at least on paper a much easier path to the finals, while JDG will have to struggle first against KT and then potentially against T1.
