American team Complexity managed to surprise G2 Esports and avenge their loss in the group stage of the competition with a convincing 2-0 victory in the first semi-final of the IEM Sydney 2023 tournament.
G2 players obviously had a bad day today, especially Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, who finished the match with only 13 frags and less than 50 damage per round, which is why he was the player with the worst rating in the team (0.52), and Complexity was able to take advantage.
Interestingly, there were no changes in map selection compared to their duel four days ago when we also saw Anubis and Ancient, and Vertigo would have been the deciding map if it had come down to it.
The main difference on the first map this time was made by a much better game of Complexity on the T side. Again the teams were evenly matched on Anubis in the first half, although Complexity managed to get a 7-5 lead, they took the second pistol round, G2 had a chance to come back after that but Complexity managed to win the round with an 11-8 score. which they started with pistols. They use the first opportunity to finish the map and with a score of 13-8 they get a 1-0 advantage.
NiKo took only five frags on the first map with an average of 30.9 damage per round, while in the ranks of G2 at least on this map the bright spot was Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov with 21 frags, but it was not enough to stop a very unpleasant rival.
And while a good Complexity game was expected at their peak, their dominance on the G2-selected Ancient map came as a big surprise.
Complexity played great defense and they broke the match open again by winning the pistol round, taking a 6-0 lead then 8-1, and all G2 managed to do was take two consolation rounds by the end of the half. In the sequel, Complexity continued to dominate and took all four remaining rounds for a convincing 13-3 victory.
The American team will fight for the title tomorrow with the winner of the second semi-final in which FaZe Clan and MOUZ meet.
